HALLOWEEN Interactive Notebook Reading Comprehension Article Tasting: CCSS

Comprehension - Standards - Interactive Notebook Activity for Non-Fiction Articles - HALLOWEEN THEMED. Need ideas for engaging Halloween Activities that can be part of a party AND are standards-based - how about this Modified Book Tasting! This activity works for grades 5-12 and covers the standards for non-fiction. High Interest Low Level and at level articles included:

  • The Origins and History of Ghosts x 2
  • The Amityville Horror - Non-Fiction x 2

It is an interactive notebook activity based High Low or at level non-fiction articles - set around a "Book Tasting"-type activity. Two articles are included.

This is an interactive notebook reading standards lesson that works for grades 4-12 that works as part of a holiday event or party for Halloween. Students are grouped. It is optional to set up a “Book Talk” environment - but an engaging festive piece.

This is an interactive notebook reading standards lesson that works for grades 4-12 that works as part of an activity, holiday event or party for Halloween. Students are grouped. It is optional to set up a “Book Talk” environment - but with an engaging festive piece. 

This resource was created to pair with one of my High Interest Low Level Haunted Reading Comprehension Passage Sets. This is the culminating activity. Have student choose one of the articles they’ve already read and then work on the interactive Notebook Pages. Or, you may select a reading.

This will work with any reading passage. I’ve included one here, but again – this was created to correspond with one of these:

Step One: Copy multiple copies of the articles on pages 22 and 23 or any of the passages from the above resources.

Step Two: Prep and Set Up – Book Talk Interactive Notebook Party.

General book tasting instructions: Sent out invitation to your students a few days ahead of time. Don’t further explain the assignment. Cut out and assemble the bunting banner.

PREP: On the day of the assignment hang bunting banner. Set up six to eight tables. Place a placement at each setting with a packet that includes the interactive notebook pages you are going to use. Either put art supplies in the middle of the table (crayons , colored pencils or markers) or have students use their own. 

Put multiple copies of the articles on the table. Let students choose and read which article they are going to work with. Walk them through the interactive notebook pages or let them go one their own. If you have time constraints – let them chose three to work on. They may select or you can.

Reflection: At the end of the activity have students fill out the “Reflections” worksheet.

Extra passages here – “1 The History of Ghosts” and “1 The Amityville Horror” are at a 2-3 grade reading level and the same passages at 5-8th grade reading level.

Sequence of Learning to Read for Older Struggling Students

Most reading scientists agree that a core linguistic deficit is the most pervasive  factor underlying poor reading at all ages (Catts et al., 1999; Shavwitz 1999.) Reading strugglers, as a group, are weak in phonemic awareness and word recognition. The process of reading is so laborious that reading comprehension is almost impossible (Stanovich & Siegel, 1994; Stankweiler et al., 1995). Without the skills to read - older students don't like to practice reading. Without practice they won't become better readers.
