Order in Which to Teach Phonics to Older Students - Decoding For Older Students

There is no right or wrong order to teach decoding to older students. It is more about starting where they are. Here is a sample order to follow with resource links.

Basic order for teaching Phonics to Older Students
  1. short vowels
  2. CVC
  3. Digraphs
  4. Double Final Consonants
  5. Blends – Beginning
  6. Beginning Letter Sounds - ex: squ-, scr-, spr-
  7. End Blends –nd), -nt), -mp), -sk), -sp), -lt), -lf), -lp), -ct), -ft), –pt), -xt),-lk), -nch)
  8. Glued Sounds -ing) sing, -ang) san
  9. Suffixes –s) dogs, -es) boxes

Both Multi-Syllable and Single Syllable Words

R- Controlled
y as a vowel
Diphthongs
Consonant –le) - -ble) bubble, -fle) ruffle, -gle) jiggle
